What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapeutic method aimed at helping individuals heal from traumatic experiences. It uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to assist in processing distressing memories. EMDR is effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attachment-related wounds, and various stress or anxiety-related disorders.
How can EMDR help me?
EMDR helps the mind recover from psychological wounds in much the same way the body naturally heals from physical injuries. In a calm yet fully supported state, EMDR works to create new neural pathways in the brain. As a result, while you will still recall the events, the memories lose their emotional intensity.
What is an EMDR session like?
EMDR involves a structured protocol that takes place over multiple sessions. The length of treatment varies from person to person.
You can expect beginning sessions to include a conversation about the process to ensure you feel safe and comfortable. We will then explore some helpful regulating tools (or resources) to support you both inside and after sessions.
After choosing the specific memory or distressing thought to focus on, I’ll guide you through eye movements (or taps) to help your brain process it in a new way, lessening its emotional impact. We will also work on replacing the negative beliefs tied to that memory with more positive, empowering ones.
When the experience has been completely processed, you will still be able to recall it, but it will not hold the same emotional charge
