What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing is a body-centered approach to healing stress disorders and trauma. Since trauma responses manifest in both the body and the mind, traditional talk therapy may not always be sufficient for processing these experiences. Somatic therapy focuses on regulating the nervous system, helping the body and mind work together to heal and build resilience.
The importance of including the body in therapy
The brain and body are deeply interconnected, constantly exchanging signals and instructions. When faced with danger, our bodies instinctively respond through fight, flight, freeze, or fawn behaviors to protect us.
A person with a well-regulated nervous system can typically recover from these responses, allowing their mind and body to return to a state of calm.
However, for individuals who have experienced trauma, this process may not function as smoothly. When overwhelmed, their body might remain stuck in a heightened danger response, leading to hypervigilance or even a state of shutdown.
Even if you intellectually recognize that you are safe, this understanding alone may not prevent your body from reacting with fear or avoidance. This is why it is important to include the body, to make the deep long lasting change you are looking for.
What is a Somatic Experiencing therapy session like?
In a Somatic Experiencing (SE) session, I’ll start by listening to what brought you in and how you're feeling in your body. Then, I'll guide you to notice and focus on any physical sensations you’re experiencing, like tightness, warmth, or discomfort.
Together, we’ll gently explore those sensations, moving between areas of tension and more neutral feelings to help your nervous system release stored stress. The goal is not to analyze, but to allow your body to process and let go of what’s been stuck.
If you’re ready to take the next step, I invite you to book your free 20-minute consultation to see if I’m the right partner for you.
